Reflections on the 2016-2017 Emerging Leaders Program

On March 30, 2017, LEAP’s Emerging Leaders Program for nonprofit staff concluded in New York City. With a special keynote conversation with Geri Mannion, Program Director, U.S. Democracy and Special Opportunities Fund at the Carnegie Corporation of New York. The seventeen participants of the 2016-2017 Emerging Leaders Program shared personal stories about their experience and received certificates amongst friends, funders, and trainers at China Blue over dinner.

Emerging Leaders Program 2016-2017 Part 1 Success

LEAP kicked off its sixth Emerging Leaders Program (ELP), a selective 6 month, 3-part program supporting and developing mid- to senior-level Asian and Pacific Islander leaders in nonprofit organizations. Selecting 17 exceptional leaders from diverse non-profit organizations across 9 states, LEAP brought together the 2016-2017 cohort in Los Angeles this past November to expand and strengthen their individual leadership skills for Part 1: The Learning Component.

More Than a Round-trip Flight

As the Director of Development at Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics (LEAP), I have had the opportunity to work with a wide range of student leaders through Leadership In Action (LIA). LIA is an eight-week paid summer internship program designed to develop emerging young leaders by providing college students with practical leadership skills and the opportunity to work hands-on in the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) community based organization in Southern California. Because of Southwest Airlines’ support of the program, LEAP has been able to provide travel for the out of state participants. In addition, LEAP also invites these participants to bring a guest to their program’s graduation.

2016 Leadership Awards Celebration Recap

On Thursday, July 21, 2016, Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics celebrated 34 years of “Growing Leaders” and to honor the leadership and accomplishments of individuals and organizations that exemplify LEAP’s mission to achieve full participation and equality for Asian and Pacific Islanders (API) through leadership, empowerment, and policy.

Over 325 guests attended the event, enjoying an evening that included a silent auction, dinner, and networking opportunities. The gala program began with welcoming speeches from LEAP Board Chair, Kenneth Chung, and LEAP President and CEO, Linda Akutagawa. This year's gala fundraised an amazing amount of over $45,000 during the Bid For Empowerment, an auction to raise money for LEAP's community programs.

Congratulations to the Leadership in Action 2016 Interns!

On August 5, 2016, LEAP completed its 19th Annual Leadership In Action (LIA) summer internship program. Leadership In Action is an eight-week paid summer internship program designed to develop emerging young leaders by providing college students with practical leadership skills and the opportunity to work hands-on in the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) community in Southern California. Selected interns are placed at their assigned community based organization for 4 days out of the week and 1 day at LEAP for leadership development. The graduation was held at the Asian and Pacific Islander Obesity Prevention Alliance (APIOPA), downtown Los Angeles. Intern supervisors, family, and friends attended the LIA graduation.
